This hacienda draws its name from Tompiatillo hill, known to indigenous cultures as Tzontecomatepetl – the hill of the skull. Its chapel, recognized as a historic monument by the Instituto Nacional de Antropología e Historia (INAH, Mexico’s Anthropology and History National Institute) remains as one of its greatest treasures. Expansive gardens, beautiful event halls, rustic guest rooms, and a terrace overlooking the panoramic views of Zempoala complete the estate.
Located in the Historic Corridor of Hidalgo State’s Pulque Highlands, in the municipality of Zempoala, Hacienda Zontecomate stands as one of the region’s most significant sites for understanding the rich heritage of Mexico’s pulque haciendas.

The hacienda’s name comes from a small rise to the west, now called Tompiatillo hill, originally known as Tzontecomatepetl, from the Nahuatl roots tzontecomati (skull) and tepetl (hill), meaning “hill of the skull.”

By the mid-19th century, under the ownership of Manuel Fernando Soto Pastrana, the Zontecomate ranch became an independent hacienda with its own administrative system. Spanning 736 hectares, it specialized in cultivating maguey and producing pulque. The architectural transformation that gave the hacienda its current appearance began in the late 1800s.

Within the main compound stands a distinctive colonial fountain, two spacious halls, and brick-columned archways that can accommodate up to two hundred guests. The stone-walled courtyard provides an ideal setting for events of up to one thousand people.
The original guest quarters have been thoughtfully adapted into welcoming spaces where visitors can experience colonial history with modern comforts.
The estate’s social areas are complemented by stables housing beautiful horses and sweeping views of the region’s pulque landscape. The chapel, an elegant 19th-century structure designated as a historic monument by the National Institute of Anthropology and History, adds to Zontecomate’s appeal.
